Malvern May Day

Now in its eleventh year, the Malvern May Day celebration is about to welcome the sun back into Malvern skies. For the first time in years the first has fallen on a Saturday, and everyone who has jumped over the Beltane fires and washed their faces in the dew to see their future love can come and dance and cavort joyously amidst magical musical mayhem. Shoppers in Waitrose will be glad to know that the streets of Malvern will not be closed for the Procession this year! Why not come down to see some of the many activities that go on in Malvern?

Thanks to grants from First Base Worcester County Council, and the Malvern Fringe, the there will be live music from the bandstand, sponsored by the editor of Sound on Sound magazine, and the Malvern Samba Band will lead the procession in a Conga formation around Priory Park. All day from 11.00 there will be activities, things to buy, charity stalls, street theatre and performances. At the Theatre of Smallest Convenience in Edith Walk there will be a special presentation at the Guinness Record Holding “Smallest Theatre in the World” throughout the afternoon. Dennis Neale will perform a short playlet to introduce the Theatre to a new audience, demonstrating its unique ambience and baroque interior.

A stone’s throw from the Park, in Orchard Road at the Friends Meeting House the Amnesty International Art Exhibition will be open to the public from 10.00 until 3.00.

Young children love to dress up and become another character, so Face Painting and Costume Making to bring to life the theme of Middle Earth will be available from 12.00 until the start of the Procession at 2.00. This year the procession is in the form of a Conga around the beautiful Priory Park, and may take up to an hour to complete. The Official and Ancient Bard of Malvern will then deliver the Annual Address to the Citizens at 3.00.

Throughout the afternoon there will be workshops including: Gymnastics Club demonstrations at 12.00 and 3.30, Fitness and Body Combat workshops demos by the Splash team and Body Balance in the Splash Studio, African drumming and dance workshop (at 1.00) by Explosive Nzakomba, who will play at the Youth Centre in the evening, a Juggling workshop led by Mr.Doo (at 12.00), a performance “trailer” for the Malvern Mystery Play to be performed in July, face painting and costume workshops, Street Magic by the Master of the Mystic at 1.30, Street Theatre by Simon Sky, Stilt Walking, a “Woodhenge” and woodwork crafts area created by Martin Thorne and Duncan, a fossil and gem stall, an Asian artefact stall with newly imported items from Mandygi, a tea and food stall featuring Kamala’s cakes, the Fringe information tent and St. John’s First Aid, an Amnesty International stall, and other charity stalls demonstrating the work of Guide Dogs for the Blind, the Cats Protection League, St. Richard’s Hospice, Fairtrade, Malvern Justice and Peace Group, The Gymnastics Club, Heart Foundation and Agenda 21.

The Malvern Spa Association will have stalls to inform about their excellent work in the town, especially at this weekend when all the Wells in Malvern will be emblazoned in colourful finery. Why not take a tour of their work around the Hills this weekend? Amnesty International will have a stall to present their continuing work against oppression, and the Amnesty International Art Exhibition. There will be live music from the Bandstand throughout the afternoon.
