2008 Malvern May Day - Theme - ‘The Green Man’
'...a day of fun in the park, live bands, stalls, workshops etc...'

The annual Malvern May Day Celebration will begin a
month-long festival taking in half-term week.

On Saturday May 3rd, Malvern Fringe Arts is kick-starting the May Fringe Festival, with the annual May Day Event in Priory Park, Gt. Malvern, starting at 11am. The theme for this years FREE day of entertainment is ‘The Green Man’.
There will be live music on the bandstand from 11am with local performers including Know I Dear, Paul White & Ray Mytton, youth band Fuse and Glam/punk/funksters The Funky Junky Monkeys.

Malvern Spa Association will also be presenting prizes to the winners of their annual competition for the best dressed Well around the Malvern Hills.

Brigit Strawbridge, of the BBC’s ‘It aint easy being Green’ show, will be promoting her ‘Plastic Bags-No Thanks !’ campaign and will be around during the day for discussion in the Green Fair tent.

There will be plenty of things to do, demonstrations and stalls, including Green Frog Pottery, Willow-weaving Workshop, Susie’s Fancy Dress and the ‘Greenlink’ Organic Food stall.

Children and parents alike are invited to take part if they wish by dressing up & taking part in the parade at 1.30pm.

Samba band Baixa Beat will be providing the rhythm accompanied by a youth group from Gwernyfed High School.

Joining the parade this year are school children from Malvern Wells Primary School who have worked w/ batik artist Marie-Therese King to make a large ‘Green Man’ banner to head the parade. St. James Primary and Northleigh Primary school children will also bringing their ‘Green Man and Maiden' masks made during art workshops in their schools prior to the event. An art work made with recycled materials from local artists ’Planet Pods’ will also be on display.

Children will be well provided for with activities during the day, with a large bouncy castle, face painting, stalls, kiddies rides, circus workshop and art/painting workshop and much more besides.

As usual May Day culminates this year with an evening gig at Malvern Youth Centre, featuring Blissfields & Glastonbury regulars ‘Subgiant’ - highly rated by BBC1’s Rob da Bank. With an armoury of samplers, decks,laptops and keyboards, Subgiant create a cinematic soundscape of breakbeat, dub, drum and bass and psytrance.
They will be bringing a light show, and the support
is local DJ Hej with House/Funk/Drum n bass.
This is a night not to be missed if you like your dance music.
