ENSEMBLE
COMPETITION FOR YOUNG PLAYERS UP TO AGE 25. A challenge for young players to demonstrate their skill in the creation of a performance event. With the full facilities of the Malvern Forum Theatre available to them, they will be asked to give a 20 minute presentation using any performance style, period or technique, the only rule being that they must include at least two recorders used for the purpose for which they were designed! This exciting event is intended to be an inspiration to both participants and audience alike. __________________________________________________________ ENSEMBLE COMPETITION Welcome to the Malvern Recorder Festival site - I hope you have had a good look at the activities planned for the weekend, and I would hope especially that you have read about the ensemble competition, which is new for 2004. In a way, I am sorry to describe it as a competition, so I would re-define it as an opportunity to extend your imagination and creativity taking your instrument, the recorder, as a starting point. We are giving you, in Malvern, a fully equipped theatre, lights, sound system, staging, and inviting you to do whatever you would like to do with your instrument. Yes, there will be judges. Yes, they will tell you what they think of you, and there will be prizes, but the real prize is your chance to expand all the ideas that you might have had, only to think 'O well, no-one is ever going to let me do that!,... ... Well, we at Malvern would love to see you do it. For example, you might want to see what it is like to play as a consort in a proper performing environment. Or you might like to play a trio sonata dressed in historical costume [think of it as a practice run for all those banqueting jobs that are going nowadays]. Or perhaps you want to play jazz, or free improvisation, or you might want to try a collaboration with dancers, or a theatre piece. The only limit is you [and 20 minutes!]. So please come and entertain us next April - the theatre has been put aside for most of the weekend for this event, and if it doesn't happen it will be terribly empty. So - students - tell your teachers what you are going to do for a change. Teachers - tell your students that you would like to try something just a bit different this year. The recorder world needs innovation, and it is only going to come from ourselves, so get creating! Tim Cranmore __________________________________________________________ |
